Week 6 - Sunny Tran

Cultural Identity and Diaspora, Stuart Hall

Hall emphasizes the  continuous transformative nature of culture, and recognizes that culture is more a matter of "becoming" than of "being". With the rise of transnationalism and the spread of the diasporic experience, the formation of cultural identity moves from identifying with a certain point of reference (i.e. a place, a time, a people, etc.) to the construction of identity from many parts and histories of ourselves to form multiple points of cultural identification.  As we transition to an era and generation that is more aware of intersectional identities, we must also be critical of how these identities are formed and their histories.

Dumbo Poreotics - Skrillex - wild for the night(remix) + Viet vina house :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv-XnEVy37Q

In this video, Dumbo (Matthew Nguyen) showcases his dance moves with friends. He is the leader of Poreotix, a half Vietnamese, half Filipino American dance crew infamous in the dance community with world-wide recognition. In Vietnam, he has been sharing his talent and learning as well in the Vietnamese dance community. However, this video was not allowed on Vietnamese television, because it was "too wild". How can diasporic subjects navigate their cultural identity if their talents, passions, interests, and expressions are silenced and censored in the communities they call home?
