Aung Lin-Week 3-Blog 3

I will write my blog about Lee’s article “Diaspora, Transnationalism…” This is probably my favorite reading so far in class because it talks about majoring in Asian American Studies. Lee basically talked about the topics I studied in my ASA classes like family structure, community, migration, labor, race and gender. One interesting thing I learned is that in the last decade, there had been a growing number of studies of Chinese. From Lee, I finally learned where the word “diaspora” came from. The term came from Judaic studies to describe the scattering of Jewish communities in Babylonian time. I thought “diaspora” came from Latin but I was wrong. Many people don’t know the benefits of majoring in ASA and think it’s useless but it’s not. I encourage all Asian students to at least minor in ASA to learn about our history, struggles and oppression we faced in America.

Question:

In the last decade, why there has been a growing number of studies of Chinese? What is so important about studying Chinese? Is it like studying China’s history? How?

Please major in Asian American Studies
