“We all write and speak from a particular place and time,
from a history and a culture which is specific.” It is important to realize
that each word we say or story we tell comes from a specific place that
pertains to our cultural identity and upbringing. Our personal narratives not
only shed light on issues from our perspective, but we can speak for those in
our community who do not have a voice or the resources to tell their stories.
Hall brings up the idea of identity surfacing and thriving through re-telling
of the past. This idea can go back to “Know history, know self. No history, no
self.” In order to drive you towards where you want to go you must acknowledge
and know your past. Sometimes hidden parts of our past arise to help us in our
present for self-discovery.
Will looking into the past change our identity in the present or for the future?
