One factor that drives the connection of transnationalism
and diaspora between Asia and America is product demand. What do people want?
What do they need? What are they willing to do to receive what they desire?
This need or want of something that someone else has motivates nations to
collaborate, negotiate and even go into war with eachother. Lee mentions in his
writing that “The need to engage constantly changing economic and political
conditions is a constant challenge.” This widespread need for power causes the
globalization of ideas, inventions, culture and people. If Asians did not
originally get displaced from their homelands would the United States have any
ties with Asia at all? Would our advances in technology still stem from across
the world in Asia? How would the relationship between the United States and
Asia be today if the US was not involved in wars happening in Asia?
Christopher Lee. “Diaspora,
Transnationalism, and Asian American Studies: Positions and Debates.”
