In the article, "Cultural Identity and Diaspora", Stuart Hall talks about cultural identity and how it affects people today about how they behave or act. Today, Asian Americans are given this label of "model minority" and they sometimes try to live the way society perceives them to be. They have to be good in math, or grow up becoming a doctor or engineer. However, Stuart Hall mentions in the reading that cultural identity is knowing your history will help people define who they are and be able to tell their own stories or this sharing of one history. Growing up, my parents wanted me to know the "American culture" and by that I never knew how to speak or understand my language. It is upsetting having to be Filipino and not know anything about your own culture. I believe knowing my cultural background and history would have helped shaped my identity today.
Question: For those who have learned about their history, how has your identity changed now compared to what it was before?
