"Cultural Identity and Diaspora" Stuart Hall
In Stuart Hall's "Cultural Identity and Diaspora the author discusses ideas of cultural identity and representation as well as how it is formed and how it affects people today. Hall explains that there are two different ways to think of cultural identity. One way to think of it is as a shared collectiveness with other people that share the same roots and traditions. Another way to look at cultural identity "becoming as well as being." That the histories of ones past is crucial but like all histories undergo constant transformation. Cultural identity in my thoughts have been defined as a set way of practices, ideology, and customs that a certain people share. Before this article, I always thought that both of these parts of cultural identity were interconnected. A persons culture is developed through lived as well as past experiences that have been passed down from generation to generation. Hall argues that even though one shares a culture they cannot know or understand the lived experiences of the past.
