In the article,
From Immigrant to Transmigrant: Theorizing Transnational, Nina Glick Schiller brings up a great argument on the idea of transmigrants. Schiller says how transmigrants are people who will need to be able to 'sustain' or live life by living in both the place/area they have settled in and the place/area they have came from. So, for example, an immigrant from Tokyo would come to America and would live in America, settle and get comfortable, while still maintaining a mindset and lifestyle as he would be living in Tokyo. Also, this transmigrant would also still communicate and still go back and forth with their settled land and their 'home' land. Schiller's idea of transmigrants was something I have never thought about and this was very interesting to me. This idea of transmigrants reminds me of what we spoke about in class and in class we spoke about the idea of 2nd generation children of immigrants are considered to be part of the diaspora or not or if they are displaced or not. This idea of transmigrants are part of the reason why we have 2nd generation children living in different parts of the Americas. I can relate and identify as a 2nd generation child from the people of China because my parents came from China to pursue a better life in America. To think about my parents struggle and every other immigrants struggle, to come to another whole new land and attempt to create a sense of 'home' out of it is crazy. This article hit home to me because I can relate to the struggle my parents have to face everyday being immigrants and the struggle I face being their child and trying to make a establishment in a land that is foreign to my family.
