In “Diaspora,
Transnationalism, and Asian American Studies: Positions and Debates”, Christopher
Lee analyzes a compilation of sources and uses the sources to show how Asian
American Studies has come to view its object of study as transnational. Upon
reading this chapter, I observed that Christopher Lee has strong feelings
towards introducing transnationalism into the diasporic study of Asia America
because he feels that without considering transnationalism, researchers would
fail to accurately describe and understand the various communities of the
diasporic population. This reading obviously connects to this week’s theme of
transnationalism because Christopher Lee is analyzing the impact that
transnationalism has on Asian American studies. This chapter is relevant to
society because it encourages future studies of the effect of transnationalism
on diasporic populations throughout different communities, which can eventually
lead to a better understanding of diasporic populations.
Question: What impact
does the study of transnationalism have on understanding the study of diaspora
in Asian American communities?
