Michael Peter Smith's article, "Can you Imagine? Transnational Migration and the Globalization of Grassroots Politics," explains how transnational migration has been expanding because of political and economic aspects of the countries, which also results in cultural exchanges and production. This changes the social construction and the living experience of the transnational migrants. An example Smith shows is that the globalization causes the migrants to deterritorialize. However the migrants try to reterritorialize by bring their ethnic community together in America, such as how the Vietnamese created a Vietnamese community, the "Little Saigon," and the Koreans creating "Koreatown."
I think that by creating a community, it doesn't mean that the migrants want to be back in their homeland. It brings together people who hold common history. Just like how the video showed the Vietnamese riots for Ho Chi Minh, the Vietnamese don't want to go back to Vietnam because of the terror they have been through.
Question: Judging by the riots video in Little Saigon and Smith's explanation of ethnic communities, does bringing together your ethic community bring more happiness or hatred?
