I truly enjoyed
reading Christopher Lee’s article, “Diaspora, Transnationalism, and Asian
American Studies: Positions and Debates”. He talks about Asian American Studies
and what it is to major in it. As someone who is taking their first Asian
American class I found it very interesting to see how someone referred to the
major and the different components. He made me think of the different
components that one can learn about like the Asian American family structure,
their migration stories, experiences of discrimination, topics like gender and
sexuality within the Asian American community. He provided more background
information to what the history of the word “diaspora” and it compared to what
we have discussed and learned in class. I believe majors like Asian American
Studies and other ethnic study majors like Chicana/o Studies are important and
much can be learned from it. I am so thankful that I am CHI major because it
has opened my eyes to so many things and given me the honor to take classes
like ASA 114 and learn things that I was not aware of about other communities.
Question: In
Chicana/o Studies we have certain communities that don’t feel as represented in
the studies of Chicana/o Studies, is the same situation common in Asian
American Studies?
