Week 7 blog: Ralph Imatong

Diaspora Politics

When I was reading this article, I could not help but think that this form of diaspora formation also happens in the Filipino community. What happens is that US citizens or immigrants would "pimp" their relatives from the Philippines to US citizen individuals so that the relatives can have a chance to come to the US. I have seen this happen and in fact, just like Schein pointed out, the families who successfully engage in these transnational marriages have an extensive economic growth because of remittances and sent boxes filled with goods. This is a smaller scale of the flow of export that Schein talked about. These marriages are often do not last long. Once a person establishes his/her immigrant status in the United States, the marriage would dissolve but the economic growth of the person's family and the sending of packages are still continuous.

How common is homeland erotics? What other factors, besides nostalgia, that drives homeland erotics?
