Week 2 blog: Ralph Imatong

Week two: Introduction: Asian American in the age of Globalization by Evelyn Hu Dehart

In Evelyn Dehart's introduction, she talked about the negative effects of globalization in Asian Americans with US government positions. In here she says that Asian Americans are virtually invisible in US foreign affairs, but in general, there are only few individuals who hold higher positions in the US government. For example, only recently that a Filipino-American woman, US Navy Rear Admiral Bette Bolivar, was elected in one of the highest positions in the US Navy. This appointment was never heard in the mainstream media although it is a huge stride for one of the largest immigrant groups in the United States. Indeed, Asian Americans in the US government is still largely unknown. However, there has been an increasing exposure of Asian Americans in the US through the use of the Internet. Youtube stars such has the WongFu Productions, NigaHiga, and Timdelaghetto have millions of followers. Because of the internet, they are now well-known across the US (based on their videos of their tours). Although, foreign affairs is completely different from being a youtube star, the influence that Ryan Higa and his peers are reaching the world faster.

Indeed, Dehart's main theme for her introduction is policy making in a global scale. However, I wonder what the effects of Youtube superstars if they happen to voice their support or disagreement to certain policies that the government issues?
