Week 10 Blog: Kurt Romero

In the reading, "In the Shadows of Stonewall Examining Gay Transnational Politics and the Diasporic Dilemma", the author talks about the movements of the gays, lesbians, and other transgenders. Stonewall was a rebellious movement fighting for their rights and protection. The author examined these ideologies and are becoming a social norm, however, there are many people who believe it is problematic in our society. In the Philippines, the word "bakla is depicted as a harmless and funny creature". However, the studies in the West have shown this to become an issue because "of AIDS epidemic...issues has increased tremendously in the Philippines". The Filipinos had no problem about this sexual identity. However, they go through this struggle of defining themselves because society discriminates against them.

Question: Have the gay, lesbian and transgender community became more accepting after recently passing the law allowing gay marriages? If not, what actions do they need to take to be accepted into this social norm?
