Elaine Hong- Week 9

In the article titled, "Notes on Queer 'N Asian Virtual Sex," by Daniel C. Tsang, Tsang discusses the life of Asian queer men on the internet and how different their lives are in the virtual world and the reality world. Participating in an online culture allows for reinvention of identity and anonymity. Those in the online world are "in control of [their] sexual identity" (Tsang 119), able to create who they want to be and regulate the amount of information that goes out into the internet. In the virtual world, they are allowed to reveal information about themselves that would normally receive much criticism or shame, due to being in a community that fosters such identity and being anonymous. As Tsang points out, those who are not Caucasian in real life can choose to be Caucasian in the online world.  (Tsang 120).

Participating in an online forum, allows for the safe exploration of one's identity. Under anonymity in a forum that focuses on queer spaces, identity exploration for people who cannot do so in real life is possible. I believe online forums foster communication and interaction with groups of people that are not within physical contact.

Question: What are your thoughts on online forums whether they be negative or positive?
