In the reader called
Asians on the Rim: Transnational Capital and Local Community the Making of Contemporary Asian America by Arif Dirlik states how the Asian community has pushed for a new term as "Asian-American" to be perceived more as a contribution to the U.S. rather than temporary residents (Dirlik, p.8). The Asian American Studies program was trying to get more involved within the political stand to show a representation of their community and get rid of the hegemonic misconceptions of their Asian community. Before action was taken by the Asian American Studies movement, the term "Asian" was constructed as "orientalism" or a "racial and cultural formation in the construal as "Asians, "orientals" or "Mongolians" by the hegemonic discourse" (Dirlik, p.4). These labels made the community believe that they had no historical implications or contributions within the U.S. land when in fact they did. In addition, this gave an idea that they had no way fo becoming "real" Americans and made it justifiable for the Asian community to go through exclusion during World War II (Dirlik, p.4). henceforth, even though there was a success with the development of the Asian American Studies, some other ethnic groups such as the Philipino community was not okay to be part of the same category that was dominantly identified as Japanese or Chinese American groups, certain classes, and genders so it led to more divisions of groups within the community. After the new wave of immigration, it has changed the economic growth within the U.S. and also made an impact and change on the identity of the Asian American community. In conclusion, the reading summarizes that Asian American identification has a complex history and an idea. (Dirlik, p.18)
