In Wanni W. Anderson and Robert G. Lee’s article “Asian American Displacements,” they cite globalization and the modern world capitalist system as a basis for the mass migrations from Asia to the Americas. In a sociological perspective, they consider the historical conditions which shaped what lead to become the Asian diaspora. They write, “Linked to a variety of trade and labor markets, war and political upheaval around the world, Asian migration to the Americas has historically been a multiclass phenomenon (pg.5).” This is the result of various immigration laws that favored different types of labor, depending on the economic situation of the US at the time. Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde goes further and argues that the population of those living in the diasporic communities affect those living in the home country, specifically for the transnational Vietnamese community. She elaborates, “Viet Nam and its diaspora have enormous cultural influence over one another, each keeping a constant watch over the progress of the other (pg.17).” It is interesting to see how political and historical forces influence the diaspora and how that affects those living in the home country, my question is how has the development of technology, especially with the rise of social media, further spreads globalization and affect the experiences of the diaspora?
