Week1_Toan Tran_ASA114

Before this week, I was not entirely sure what exactly was a diaspora. From past experiences, I have only heard the term used to describe African-American populations. But, from our in-class discussions and the works of Valverde, we can ingrain in ourselves that "diaspora groups and individuals are displaced and living away from their homeland, hav[ing] both connections to and alienation from their homeland, experienc[ing] ambivalence toward both their homeland and adopted country, hav[ing] connections with others in diaspora, and creat[ing] new shared, hybrid cultures," (Valverde, p.6). I found this topic to be interesting because it showed how diasporas and displacement can come in so many different forms when referring to different groups and experiences. I have met and heard stories from people who were impacted by the Second Indochina, or Vietnam, War—of which their families, friends, and relatives have these ambivalent feelings towards their country and have created this new, shared, hybrid culture. I found this topic to be interesting because I want to search for more of those stories from people who have experienced this and learn from how they were able to start from anew, away from what they possibly once considered as home.

Q: How did the issue of intellectual displacement that diaspora groups experienced get resolved? In what ways does it possibly continue to this day?
