Nina Glick Schiller’s chapter “Lived Simultaneity and Discourses of Diasporic Difference” focuses on the complexity of social relations transnationally while critiquing the definition of diaspora. “The concept of diaspora ... as Maira points out, participates in a form of cultural politics that creates unity through concepts of shared essentialized biological descent-based based identities” (Schiller, Kindle Locations 2271-2272). I had the privilege of taking Professor Maira’s class ASA 189E titled Asian/Arab American Studies Intersections: Youth, Globalization, Citizenship. In this course, we discussed the concept of cultural politics that shapes how immigrants and their children navigate their space in America. For example, the diaspora of Indian American youth in New York created a space for themselves through hip hop as I have linked in a Youtube video. These Indian American artists created a space for themselves in the predominantly White/Black music scene in New York. They punched a hole through expectations and stigmas against Islamophobia and mistreatment of Arab and South Asians.

Question: What are other examples of cultural hybridity other than Indian hip hop from New York?
