According to the reader,
Transnationalizing Viet Nam by Kieu-Linh Valverde explains how some diasporic communities have connections to their homeland but their homeland/country may not have a good relationship within the country they currently live in (Valverde, p.2). Even though there is a hostile presence or legal action processed within their countries the Vietnamese and diaspora still maintain a connection through "transnational acts" (Valverde, p.2). In addition, Valverde recognizes that transnational studies can strengthen the ties between the Vietnamese and Vietnamese Americans that can positively affect the lives and identities of both groups (Valverde, p. 3). In order for Valverde to research the effects of globalization it has on both sides of the community she conducts interviews that took about two decades to develop. This part of the reading reminds me of the lecture we had in class when professor Valverde mentioned how Area studies were not enough to learn what was going on overseas. So Asian diaspora and Asian American students supported the idea to develop an ethnic studies course to expand their knowledge and activism.
Are there current government officials in Vietnam that support the transnational connection between the diaspora group and Vietnamese who live in Vietnam?
