Week3_Vanesa Guillen_ASA114

The reader called Lived Simultaneity and Discourses of Diasporic Difference by Nina Glick Schiller states that there's a difference between studying or "speaking" of diasporas than diving into the experiences of relationship and culture of the diaspora community (Schiller, kindle location p.2252). She further argues that the diaspora can also have a connection to "economy, institutions and cultural production framed by the political processes of other-nation states" (Schiller, Kindle location p. 2256). In addition, she states how "transnational social spaces" are like "metaphors" that are created socially and culturally from the economy, school, and politics (Schiller, Kindle location 2263) and that they are not physically attainable. In conclusion, she believes that in order to understand the diaspora, it is important to also be aware of the complexities of identity constructions.

1. Are there more methods made to challenge diasporic studies besides using the ethnographic approach?
