Asians have settled in every country in the Western Hemisphere through descendants of immigrants who arrived decades and centuries ago and some are through recent arrivals. In Christoper Lee’s “Diaspora, Transnationalism, and Asian American Studies: Position and Debates,” he examines how Asian American studies has come to be a significant object of study as transnationalism. Displacement and Diasporas explores the transnational Asian American experience that crosses through the entire world. Asians across the Americas have been shaped by the social dynamics and politics of settlement locations as much as by transnational connections and economic forces of globalization. Lee states, in order to understand the Asian diaspora, one must first understand the connection between Asia and America. Asian American Studies provides knowledge and insight on the Asian diaspora and the Asian community that was previously overlooked by scholars. Through Asian American Studies, contributors can reshape America’s perspectives on the Asian diaspora. With this perspective and insight in mind, Americans can understand and learn about the background and struggles of the Asian diaspora.
Can Americans truly understand the struggles and challenges of the Asian diaspora through Asian Americans courses?
