Week 2
Globalization
In Asian American Formations in the Age of Globalization, by Evelyn Hu-Dehart, the effects of globalization are laid out through various examples, including one comparing two Asian American role models. Some effects of globalization are noted as positive relations leading to economic gain, while on the flip side can be seen as a negative in creating assumptions and stereotyping other countries/cultures in business. This is a prime example of just how important globalization is in society. What many people don't think about is how the economic side of globalization can impact a small village or community. For example, it is not uncommon for businessmen to travel to different countries, and while they might enjoy their time there, natives of the country often find it annoying to see outsiders taking advantage of their home. This example is general and either country can be applied to either side of the argument.
Looking from an outside perspective, one could say that this example is the way some Americans feel about immigrants coming to the U.S. However, the U.S. is known for being the land of opportunity and is even marketed as so through the American Dream. In addition, it goes both ways with Americans moving elsewhere for a living. Though, it is worth noting that this example is what often stems the feeling of needing to assimilate due to the pressures of proving belonging-- hence one of the effects of the Asian diaspora. So, how can we, as a society, work together to teach respect for other countries and keep up the competition, rather than shaming others for globalizing their trade for the life they seek.
