Stuart Hall identifies that there are different approaches to cultural identity in his essay “Cultural Identity and Diaspora.” Hall argues that there is more than one definition and one meaning of cultural identity. He explains that in one definition, the similarities between different groups is salient while the other definition focuses more on the differences and similarities of the communities between their current experience and historically. I agree that it is important to recognize that cultural identity also develops through the knowledge of history and what one’s ancestor’s past. An individual’s current cultural narrative is significant; however, one must also realize their culture has transformed over time according to the peoples’ experiences. The question I have to ask after reading this article is, does an individual develop more cultural growth when learning about their people’s past or when they are exposed to current cultural traditions. Is there a balance between Hall’s definitions of cultural identity?
