In their chapter “Asian American
Displacement”, Anderson and Lee explain the historical displacement of many
different ethnic groups from Asia and the reasoning why these groups had to
leave. Anderson and Lee also define
displacement as a separation of people from their native culture through various
means, including but not limited to colonization or physical dislocation. Anderson and Lee also expand this by bringing
up the concept of home and how it means, “asserting and negotiating one’s
culture and one’s right to a place and space”.
What I find most interesting about this chapter are the narratives of
the different groups that have been displaced from Asia, like the Iu-Mien who
had came from Southeast Asia which is very much like the narrative of my
parents.
Question: How does one maintain
connection back to their homeland, even if they have never been there before?
