Post Week 9 –Daniel C. Tsang Article Review

By Miggy Cruz

Daniel C. Tsang in “Notes on Queer ‘N Asian Virtual Sex,” presented his findings about Asians and how, mostly Asian males, identified themselves online. He focused on the Bulletin Board System (BBS) website as a site where anyone could “change one’s biographical particulars, e.g., ethnicity, age, domestic partnership status, class, or even sexual orientation” (199-120). He concludes that nothing is private, especially in online dating chats.

I found Tsang’s point, “The diversity of Asian identities in the U.S. is reflected in the Asian gay or bisexual male membership of the BBS” (120), most interesting because identity has always been the forever changing factor that changes who we are. As Tsang pointed out it is more difficult for Asiana males to “come out” because of the Asian culture being so conservative in its views, and many of them are attracted to Caucasians, hence fueling the Anglo-Conformity ideology. In the past month, I have encountered several people who were on the streets trying to advocate for gay rights, most of them not being of Asian descent. It is clearer that the LGBTQIA community is expanding and it needs to be recognized, but we need to do so on equal grounds.

Question: Where and what caused Anglo-conformity? Why it that even the LGBTQ community influenced by this ideal that the “white” race is so admirable?
