Week 11 Blog Post

In “Introduction: Asian Diasporas- New Conceptions, New Frameworks,” Rhacel Perrenas and Lok Siu define the meaning of diaspora and what it means for Asian populations to be in diaspora and how it affects the field of Asian American studies. It is important because the topic of diasporas in the field of Asian American studies is not very prominent so Rhacel Perrenas and Lok Siu’s analysis of the effects of diasporas in Asian populations is quite helpful to the field of research. This introduction chapter relates to this week’s theme of (Re)thinking Diasporas and Class Conclusion because it brings us full circle back to where we started the class which is discussing what a diaspora is and why it matters in Asian American studies. It connects to events outside of class because discussions about diasporas are growing in popularity in the field of Asian American studies so this insight can be an important contribution to the study of diaspora amongst the Asian population.

Question: What affect does the study of diaspora have on the field of Asian American studies?
