Week 1 - Mimi Le ASA114

Globalization had helped Vietnamese immigrants stay interconnected with their homeland. Through technological development, “diasporas are formed and their impact on the host and home countries even as they transcend traditional nation-state borders to maintain linkages” (Valverde 15). Diaspora is introduced through Vietnamese immigrants who were displaced from their homelands and adopted a new culture. With intentions to return to their homelands, we see that over the years that they maintain their connection to their homeland through building a Vietnamese community. By coming together to shape a new political image of Vietnam, working towards anticommunism, they work towards constituting Vietnam into a new political era. I thought this was interesting because Vietnam is a communist country and how people fled because of the war, by reshaping their political views, they become representatives, raising awareness about the social and economic conditions that Vietnam has faced for past generations. With the newer Vietnamese generations, their interests in reconnecting with their roots empowers them towards international studies and build relations across borders.

Question: Millions of Vietnamese immigrated to the United States since 1975, what are some movements they created to demolish the communist government in Vietnam? How will the newer generation have an affect on the issue?
