According to the reader called
Defying and Redefining Vietnamese Diasporic Art and Media as Seen through Chau Huynh's Creations by Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde, opens the reading with a dialogue about an art exhibition for the Vietnamese community called F.O.B. II: Art Speaks but it causes protests and controversies for the anti-communist groups and as a result, the exhibition was canceled. Also, the group found Chau Huynh as another controversy because of some pedicure basins that she created which symbolized the Republic of Viet Nam. The group considered that as "lack of respect for the memory of a lost country" (Valverde, p.91). Within those dialogues, Valverde wants to show that there is a struggle in media and art representation with the older generation and newer generation after the Indochina War. Due to controversies about the representation of certain kinds of Vietnamese communities leads to restrictions and oppression against "cultural production" (Valverde, p.92). Chau's story as to why she created the flag shows that there's more to it than communist propaganda that anti-communist groups proclaim. The pedicure basins represent how the overseas Vietnamese still economically help those who live back in Viet Nam (Valverde, p. 95). Unfortunately, her message was translated as negative portrays for the anti-communist group and began to criticize her in many ways. In conclusion to the reading, it states that these anti-communist groups mostly di it for the act of fear. Fear of being forgotten of their history and the things they have gone through. Hopefully, the newer generation for the diaspora continues to evolve for their community and not hold on to fear.
What kinds of work are currently being taken work to dismantle the fear for the older generation or perhaps create a safe environment to express the Vietnamese community?
