Image result for identity

From Stuart Hall's "Culture identity and diaspora" he makes a point about how identity can be defined into two ways: the "collective one self" which means a group with shared ethnic background are bound by their history and the "who we really are" which is the identity that is created through the influences in culture and history.  With these two distinct idea of identity, it can almost be seen as the identities of the old and the young. To me the older generation tends to fall into the first groups with them having a strong lingering attachment to homeland and the people.  The younger generation tends to be the second definition with being influence by many things growing up in the host country and experience the new culture, power differences and still their ethnic heritage all combine together to create an identity.

How does this difference in identity help divides group of people? How can we bring about changes to make a shared connection of the two definition ?
