In Diaspora Politics, Homeland Erotics, and the Materializing of Memory, Louisa Schein discusses the discourses and events that materialize a homeland for Hmong in diaspora. Schein states that Hmong people have multiple homelands. Furthermore, she presents two vignettes. The first vignette she presents is a specific event happening during the Hmong New Year in Fresno, California. Schein states, “This year is special. Certain Hmong American leaders have invited two representatives of the Lao royal family, now living in exile in France, to join the festivities”. Their presence at the New Year represented a unified identity of Hmong and Laos through their similar experiences in political standing and struggles. The second vignette she discusses “Instead, it is that the male tourists promise escape from peasant life through marriage but only spend a lascivious evening with a homeland girl and then move on”.
The second vignette is about how male Hmong Americans have visited the Hmong villages in China, only to sleep with the young women who are promised a chance to migrate or move to the United States. Unfortunately, they are often left behind and forgotten by these men.
What is the relationship with Hmong and Laos people now?
