In Transnational Migration and the Globalization of Grassroots Politics, Michael Peter Smith discusses several emergent dimensions of globalization of culture not characterizing the lived experience of transnational migrants, exiles, and refugees. Smith examines how transnationalism had led to the process of “deterritorialization”. He defines “deterritorialization” as the severance of social, political, or cultural practices from their native places and populations. Furthermore, he explores the ways in which global grassroots movements are already practicing modes of thought and action that move our political imaginary beyond the limits of global-local duality in social theory and its practical expression in the political slogan. Smith presents the complex layers and multiple interwoven scales of thought and action discernable in such movements by reference to four examples.
What are some examples of current transnational grassroots organizations?
