Pahnia Vang: Week 1 Blog

In Anderson and Lee "Asian American Displacements," the notion of displacement in the sense of Asians in America is a range consisting of "...physical dislocation, banishment, and exile" (pg. 11). The focus upon displacement cannot be discussed without inquiring diaspora within Asian American communities. As the first chapter of the book, Anderson and Lee introduced what and how the displacement of Asians has in American has re-conceptualized, transformed, rejected, and replaced ones' ancestral culture or the culture of the birthplace. One critical distinction among displacement was the sense of place in which as stated helps play a central role in the construction of self and group identity. By sense of place, home becomes recognized as a central factor in looking at diaspora and displacement of Asian Americans. What is home and how has this sense of place became key to better understand those in displacement and diaspora? The experiences of those living in diaspora are different for everyone in regards to location of displacement, generational status, economy, politics, and so forth. To introduce diaspora through looking at displacement and sense of place, I believe it will open up interesting findings that are central to define and add onto what is really Asian American Diasporas.
