Blog 1-Week 1

Statue of Liberty in New York that Anderson and Lee mentioned in their article

I will write my blog about Anderson and Lee’s article “Asian American Displacements.” Anderson and Lee used 100th birthday of Statue of Liberty and connected to the day Asian Americans arrived to America. Anderson also talked about migration, labor and gold discovery. Anderson mentioned in his article the story of Carlos Bulosan. This story always makes me feel sad because hardworking Filipinos that served during WWII got nothing in return and still faced racial oppression every day. Bulosan was a migrant worker trying to pay rent and put food on the table and he died without becoming American citizen and there are millions of Asians out there that went through the same thing. The most interesting part of the article is about Asians that are physically and culturally displaced like Chinese immigrants in Mexico, Cuba and the West Indies and the Japanese in Brazil. This part reminded me of my dad’s business partner Kwan who is Chinese but he was born and raised in Mexico. I had no clue how his parents got there. I was also stunned that Kwan can speak Spanish fluently.

Question:

How exactly did these Asians get displaced physically and culturally? How did Chinese get to Mexico? How did Japanese get to Brazil? What is the history behind all these displacements? Is displacement part of "Diasporas" definition and how?
