This article talks about the movement of Asians to America. The author emphasizes the importance that this movement is an almost forceful displacement of Asians unlike the more glorified terms like diaspora and transnationalism. Before taking this class I didn’t know what a diaspora was or what the word meant. To me it gave off a positive connotation and also as we discussed the definition of diaspora in class my group came to the conclusion that diaspora was just a nicer way of saying immigration. The authors also make the point to say that ‘place’ is an integral part of displacement and diaspora. The importance of 'place' that the author emphasized is important but what about the people who don't originally have a homeland. Would these people be considered displaced? Or would their homeland be the 'place' they were kicked out of? I think it is also important to emphasize to the fact that Asian immigrants are extremely diverse socially and economically. However Americans don't really see us as this diverse group of people. They only think of us as the well of business owners but media also helps to reinforce this false perception of Asian as in the TV show Fresh Off The Boat.
